FromSoftware's Dodge Roll Merits Praise

Having spent time with Elden Ring, or nearly any action-adventure title, you're probably well-versed in the glorious technique called the “evasion roll.” This evasion technique lets your avatar to perform a front, lateral, or rearward tumble to dodge any enemy attacks and gain space from foes. Seems useful, doesn't it?

The evasion roll, however, has attracted plenty of criticism, not simply as a result of the somersault; some have dubbed it unintelligent, a cop-out, and an unrealistic move — and sometimes, I concur. Picture me tumbling about nearby enemy groups in a well-known fantasy game — can't touch this Geralt! But this game's rolling dodge represents the evasion to top all dodge rolls evasion moves, and let me explain.

For this particular game, the creators discovered an excellent method to counter all sentiments claiming the maneuver is overly simple: simply give every enemy unreasonable strength, multiply it, and all heroes who approaches them will appreciate deeply because of their evasion move, myself included. When the stakes are this high, successfully rolling to victory seems like an accomplishment, rather than a cheap trick.

No different defensive move in Elden Ring matches this feeling of accomplishment and dependability, because swift moves offer limited distance and blocking attempts are easily broken by powerful foes. One player advised leaping as the primary Elden Ring dodging technique, but besides failing to offer ideal movement, I couldn't understand how receiving a fatal blow could enhance my odds of overcoming challenges (lack of skill, maybe).

Perfecting the Skill

Although the dodge roll offers respite in an otherwise brutal game, it isn't without skill. To begin with, the game's evasion move only triggers a frame of protection once you let go of the evasion key, which stops a quick, panicky escape from perilous circumstances. Additionally, even though it can move you aside from opponents, it's much better to use it as an opportunity to advance, optimally at their back, and strike blows. And, finally, you must still comprehend and predict enemy attacks, as dodging at the start of an extended wind-up may end your invincibility prior to the hit connecting… causing significant harm.

A Harmonious System

Although evasion-rolling in quick succession may look a bit ridiculous (give it up for Geralt again), this isn't really an option in Elden Ring. Naturally, that still doesn't make it a realistic fighting maneuver — which is precisely why it would be dreadful to experience it in a product like a realism-focused RPG — but this is a spectacular magical game being considered, so who cares?

Similar to any respectable dodge roll, Elden Ring's dodge motion is improved by a small acrobatic jump at the start, providing a dynamic sensation instead of dropping the character onto the ground. Based on your equipment, the technique may seem extremely nimble or moderately cumbersome, but it remains faster and more fluid than the rolling dodges featured in Dark Souls. True, you will stick your oversized sword on the floor while equipped with it, but that's your responsibility for failing to use a crossbow (Just kidding — steer clear of Elden Ring with projectile weapons).

Ideal Equilibrium

Elden Ring's avoidance feature creates the perfect balance between obstacle and possibility, providing prospects of success while endangering that very prospect at the smallest error. Perfect this move, and you'll be rewarded with not just victory, but fulfillment.
